About 1.5 months…

In a month and a half, I am going to have a visitor come and stay with me for a week, and I am so excited.  Yes, this would be “him”…

 

We are talking pretty much daily, and we are getting on very well so far.  Nothing to complain about really… Only complaint I have is he is far too nice to me for what I am used to.  He’s an awesome artist, a fantastic conversationalist, has a rip-roariously funny and quick wit, so sweet, cares about me a lot, and all of these things are so opposite what I am used to getting treated to and like, it’s going to take some real getting used to.  However, he is also patient, and that is what I need mostly right now.

 

He also accepts and loves me for what I am RIGHT NOW, and supports *ME* making the changes I want to make as long as I am the one who wants them.

 

OK, so it still isn’t time to announce who this uber amazing guy is, I still want some time with him on my own so we can sort out on our own level what kind of relationship this is really going to be.

 

If it doesn’t work out, it is going to be a terrible shame and a horrendous waste as I feel and he states to me on a regular basis.  Only time will tell.

 

But the real point of this pointless post is to announce that he called me today, as we tend to do very regularly, and that is when it hit me.  As of today, we only have about a month and a half.  That means I have to get my costume ready in a rush.  I knew I was in a hurry, but in July it felt forever away.  It still feels like it will never get here, but I realize it’s only about 50 days, so I have to get cracking…

 

Probably going to be silent until I post some pics of us (if I get brave enough).

Disappointment…

Well it has been determined that the old computer isn’t even worth the p-p-p-p-p-p-parts to make the Steampunk Cintiq.  It was a good thing I got my new one when I did.  But a pain at the same time… as I wasn’t really ready yet.

Finding my way around on this computer has proven both an exercise in adventure and discovery as well as frustration.  It is truly amazing to me that someone can get so used to things being a “certain way” even down to where your fingers fall for the keyboard.  But I am slo-o-o-owly finding the differences and making note of them for future reference.

On a quick sidenote, I can’t wait until October comes… I just know EVERY ONE wanted to know that… LOL

Well, I’m only writing here out of sheer boredom and so I will end it and go play a game or draw a picture or sculpt something or do something productive now…

New Beginnings

I am very excited for several reasons.  A couple days ago I got myself a necessary new computer which does several things for me.  First of all, I can stop hobbling along on my old computer which kept crashing and I was loosing files and projects on a regular basis.  It also allows me to get into creating that Steampunk Cintiq Laptop I have commented about earlier.  It also allows me to work much more smoothly, as I don’t have to battle with whether it is going to boot and stay running and keep connected.  I can close the monitor, which will allow me to keep it much cleaner and safer, and in finality (that I can think of on the spur of the moment) it has all it’s keys (WOOO HOOOO!)

What did I get?  I got a Dell Inspiron 1545.  It’s got a 250 GB Hard Drive, a 1.9 GHz 800 MHz FSB 1 MB cache Intel Celeron Dual Core T3000 processor, a 3 GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM which is expandable to 4 GB, CD/DVD Writer (handles DVD +/- RW), a 10/100 mbps Ethernet and Wireless 802.11 b/g modem, a 15.6 inch glossy High Def widescreen format monitor with Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 4500 MHD integrated graphics, 7-1 Media card reader, 3 USB 2.0 ports, VGA Video Output, Express Card 34mm slot as well as some other minor “bonuses”.  I am currently running Vista, but will be upgraded to Windows 7 when it is released in late October.  It’s pink, which wasn’t my first preference, but hey, when I am staring at the screen working on a digital painting or talking with my  friends and “boyfriend”, or working at my job, the case color is not so obvious, and on top of that, there isn’t a risk of confusing my computer for his and vice versa now.  LOL

Oh, you didn’t know I have a “boyfriend”?  Why are you writing that in quotes you ask?  Well, I do love him with all my heart and adore him immensely, but we are taking things a bit slowly for protection of our own feelings and those of our friends until we make some sort of decision down the road.  Yes, I am interested in him, and I love being around him, we tell each other we love each other, it’s as real and as fabulous as anything I have ever felt – no it is better than anything I have ever felt, but there are many other people to consider besides our individual selves.  Hopefully (not that we are putting a decision deadline on it) we will know something more in a couple months or so, as we are planning an extended period together, and we will learn if it is real attraction, just infatuation, or just lust. LOL.  I’m hoping it’s really real as I really could see myself being in love with him.

Who is he?  Well, because not everyone knows about us yet, I am choosing to keep you temporarily in the dark, but as soon as we know what to announce, we will announce it and shine light on everyone around us happily.

Other new beginnings?  Well the relationship was the main additional one, but there is also my attempts to get some work going with my “Socking Stuffers” to go to shows and fairs with.  You can see a few on my DA account at http://weavingmagic.deviantart.com

Other new beginnings?  I have been working on some (in my opinion) very nice digital paintings but considering translating them (or some of them) into weavings.

Updates:

Well, here we are at the end of the month, and I am getting ready to do a massive art upload in a few days. I have been very busy working on things to sell. I would like to first write a post about some some things I have been doing.

I have finally finished the monkeys necklace. Hard to believe, but it is true! It is finally done! You can't believe how ecstatic I am over this. I am very proud of how it looks and look forward to sharing it with you.

I have been writing several articles on Helium of late. Don't know what Helium is? It's a great place where you can share your knowledge, and get paid to do so. You won't get rich doing it, but it is a nice little supplement to your regular income, and you can write about things you know! Who doesn't want to show the world how smart they are!

I am finishing up all 4 seasons Carousel Horses that I have been talking about. They will be included in all the other posts.

Today I intend to design the ACEO playing cards for hearts 2-10.

I am just about finished with the Herald of Spring piece. It took a while to decide how to make it attach to a chain, but I am happy with the decision I have made, I just need to "make" it.

Working from home

Many people are considering the possibility of working from home as an alternative to working in the standard good old 9-5 corporate world. I am doing it. I have found it to have many positives, but there are a few drawbacks I have found over time.

Pros:
  • You can generally (depending on the specifics of the job you are working on) set your own hours. If you aren't a morning person, you can work in the afternoon. If you want your Friday's off, you can do that. If you always have to do yoga from 9-11 M-W-F, that can be arranged.
  • You have more control over the income you make.
  • You can generally (depending on the specifics of the job you are working on) work more than one job which allows for variety and lowers the monotony and makes daily work life more interesting.
  • You can deal with emergencies, little schedule conflicts, and issues more easily (depending on who you are working for)
  • You can feel more comfortable (in your own setting, with your own surroundings, furniture, television, kitchen, etc.)
  • Save money on gas (no commute).
  • Save money on other expenditures (clothes, insurance, etc.)
Cons:
  • You typically don't get the insurances that you would normally have access to.
  • You have to be self sufficient/strong willpower/scheduling/organization to get work done (not get distracted by television, cleaning house, incoming phone calls, shopping, etc.)
  • You don't make as much per hour/job.
  • You don't get the social interaction.
  • You don't have the same opportunities for advancement.
Most of these con's are easily set off by a pro, but you have to really think through it enough to examine whether working from home is truly right for you.

If it is, there are several opportunities available.

For me, working from home is the perfect solution to my situation. I get to set my own hours, I get to do anything I need/want to do, and I get to set my own pay. I personally don't have many expenses currently, and I am happy to make a little to start building my nest egg to contribute to my planned move to the UK.

Also, these jobs will transfer to the UK. I can work from anywhere. If I go on a trip and get in a bind and need to get some money for an emergency, I can do some work, get paid, and voila, no more emergency. I am thrilled with my arrangement!

And it allows me time to be an artist, which is what I am really focused on!

"ACEO" Playing Cards

At this point I am going to do an Anglo - American deck of cards. I may do the various other styles of decks, but right now I am just focusing on one - the one I know the best.

The rules for Anglo - American decks of cards are:
  • 52 cards.
  • 4 suits Diamond, Heart, Spade, Club One of each pip/number - Ace (1), 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,Jack,Queen,King
  • The face cards are historically reversible.
  • Typically 2 Jokers (sometimes 1 or 4) with one being more colorful than the other(s).
  • Jokers have no hearts, diamonds, spades, or clubs on them.
  • Index lables of number and suit on opposite corners, one being the top right.
  • The Jack of Spades, Jack of Hearts, and King of Diamonds are drawn in profile.
  • The King of Hearts is the only King with no mustache, and is also typically shown with a sword behind his head, making him appear to be stabbing himself. (suicide king)
  • The axe held by the King of Diamonds is behind his head with the blade facing toward him. (suicide king)
  • The Jack of Diamonds is laughing.
  • Queen of Spades holds a scepter.
  • Queen of Clubs holds a flower.
  • Usually the other queens hold a flower as well, styled based upon suit.

Current progress of artwork

Here is a standing of all work I am in the midst of, for anyone who is interested. I will try to keep a post running of current, future, and past projects to be able to update customers, collectors, and other interested parties.

  • Steam punk Cintiq Laptop Computer:
    I have been gathering research from various blogs, websites, and forums. I want to make this as inexpensive as possible, but as fun and "fantastic" as possible. I am not only researching the constructions of home made Cintiqs, but various styles and ideas in steam punk and "retro technologies". This is getting very fun and exciting as I go deeper and deeper, and I have only put one additional caveat to my rules. It has to fit into the backpack I purchased when I bought the computer to carry it around. I don't want this getting too out of hand with googly artsy stuff. The backpack is very nice, was very expensive, and protects it very nicely.   • Carousel Horses:
    I nearly have Spring completed, and have been drawing some ideas up for Summer, Winter, and Fall/Autumn. I am really excited about all of them, and will have them all (and yes, I mean ALL) of them posted early in the month of May. Then I have a new series planned with them, that will be most definitely very fun to do.
  • ACEO Cards:
    I have several set up and ready to post, I just need to get them photographed / scanned (haven't decided which yet)
  • Playing Cards Deck:
    Haven't started. Still gathering information on the basic design of them. I will do this shortly though - as soon as a couple other larger projects get completed.
  • Drops of Jupiter by Train Painting:
    It's planned, sketched, and I am working on a rough to get the quirks all worked out. Then I will be painting 1 of the 3 copies of the piece. 1 will never leave my possession.
  • OOAK Munny Doll:
    This is a gift for a good friend of mine. I have his gloves made, his boots planned (but not constructed yet, and have started on his chain mail (chainmaille). I am planning a helmet and a sword that I am making sketches of, and will construct as well. His belt is already made, and now I just have to figure out about his shirt, and paint the face. He's just about the cutest thing you ever saw!
  • Jewelry Line:
    Yes, I have been saying this was coming forever, but it really is. I am getting some designs finished up, and have found a model willing to wear the jewelry to photograph it. I just have to finish them, and send it to the UK. Thanks Lanny! You're a absolute doll!
  • "Mandalas":
    These are being made similar to the idea of Native American Indian sand paintings. True Sandpaintings were destroyed, not saved, and the ones that are sold as "authentic" Sandpaintings have some of the imagry altered to protect the very deep spiritual/religous significance, but they are sold to help preserve the practice of Sandpaintings as the modern world invades the centuries old culture of the Native American peoples. My Mandalas are made out of polymer clay, and designed to be significant to a person, an issue, or a wish. The colors are meaningful, and the designs are specialized. I don't take direct from the Native American People out of respect for their culture and their lively hood, but my little Mandalas are meant to be hung, or put somewhere (private or public) to give a focus of strength, health, wealth, happiness, what ever may be desired. These will be posted (and each posted as it is created), both on my website (http://www.magicweaver.com) which is under massive reconstruction, and here on my blog.
  • Stock Photography:
    I am going to be breaking into the Stock Photography field. I will be selling stock photos on several websites (to be decided after researching some), and providing "free stock" on several locations as well (again decided after researching some). If you have any stocks that you would like photographed, please, let me know and I will see what I can do. I am always looking for new ideas. I will probably focus on plants, flowers, and animals since that is what I have an over abundance of around me, but please, any ideas, requests, thoughts will be welcome.
  • My Website:
    Yes, I have been talking about this for quite some time, but I think I finally have it decided what I am going to do with my website. I will be spending quite a bit of time in the evenings working on it. I will announce it's Grand Re-opening when I am done.   • Coloring Books:
    I have several versions in the making, and will be publishing them via DVD (to be able to print as many of any page you want), or via print (1 copy per page). More details to come.
  • Greeting Cards:
    I have several designs in the making, a few have been completed, but I am working on a full set before any are released.
  • Pysanky:
    I have many eggs of many types (ranging from chicken to Ostrich) that I will post for sale. Even though the tradition is to leave them whole, because some people don't know how to care for a whole Pysanky egg, and I can't trust they will follow my instructions, and because of shipping issues, I sell drained eggs. Trust me, you don't want an egg exploding in the night. It is a foul smell, and they are very tempermental.
  • Gourd/Egg Sculptures:
    This is kind of hard to explain, so just know, it is coming soon!

Creating a Steam Punk laptop computer / Cintiq / amazeamathingamajig

I have wanted to do this for a while, and creating some smaller pieces (hopefully getting photos soon) has really fired this idea back up again.

I am going to convert my old laptop that my ex husband broke the hinges on the monitor into a piece of art, and I am going to document my efforts here. First is the research, as I still use my laptop, and don't want to be without it for very long because it is my main means of communication with several groups and individuals.

OOOHH, I can feel my fingers tingle with the excitement.

First of all, what my computer is.

I have a Gateway laptop 120 GB AMD Turion 64 Wireless compatible, DVD/CD burner, 4 USB ports, the monitor works as long as it is rubber banded in place (always open) to a wooden frame that my dad built for me when Martin (&$!#@) so rudely broke it. It's a decent computer. Could use some upgrading of parts (would like a faster processor - quad core would be really nice as I am dual core now - with a better graphics card for my gaming - yes, I'm a female gamer - but what really is getting my panties in a twist is the idea of incorporating the Cintiq / tablet qualities into the monitor, so I can create my digital art ON my digital art! *wants to pass out at the mere possibility*. You have no idea how much that would turn me on!) The detailed specifics of what I have are:

Microsoft Windows XP Professional
Gateway Model MX6455
System is X86 Based PC with an X86 Family Model 36 Stepping 2 Authentic AMD ~1989 Mhz
CD ROM Drive is HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4082N
My display is ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M Series RAM 64 MB, Resolution 1280x800x60 herz
My Keyboard is a standard 101/102 key Microsoft natural ps2 keyboard wit 12 Function Keys (no number pad)(I want to replace this too. It's got keys that don't work, some missing (thanks to the never being able to close it and needing to travel with it, and some broken / not sensitive to touch).
My pointing device is a Synaptics PS/2 port toucpad wit 5 buttons (though I only use the up and down scroll bar and 2 buttons (one of which is.... dah dah DAHHHHH .... loosing paint)
My modem is a AC97 Soft Data Fax Modem with Smart CP
I have a Standard Dual Channel PCI IDE Controller which has a *screeching gasp* broken door
I have 4 USB 2.0 Ports, an Eternet port, a regular phone port, a 5 in 1 memory stick reader, a firewire port, headphone, and microphone jack, and plug in for external monitor.

I will need to work around most of these ports, but might be able to move some when I open up the case and look inside. *rubs hands together in fervent anticipation*

It all works fairly well, and I would be satisfied to "improve" at a later date if finances wouldn't allow me to get what I want right away, but I am off for a few minutes to gather my wish list.

New Project sparked

I just got a second idea for a new project using ACEO cards. I will be making at least 1, (maybe multiple different ones) ACEO cards as playing cards. 54 of them, including the jokers. I just need to do a little minor research (as I am not that much of a card player) to figure out what the different details are (such as how many one eyed queen, king, and jacks there are, etc.)

If you are interested in "commissioning" one of these decks from me, let me know. I would absolutely be open to the idea of making one to "order"!

So many projects, so little time...

I am doing a series of 54 original ACEO cards. They will be available for sale through this blog, my website, ebay, art-cards.org, and artcardswanted.com.

I hope these will be some inspiration sparking quick little polished works for me to test (hopefully successfully) some ideas for larger pieces.

Don't know what ACEO cards are? They are also called ATC (though not 100% interchangeable).

ACEO stands for Art Cards Editions and Originals. ATC stands for Artist Trading Cards. Artist Trading Cards can be printed "copies" ad noseum of the same card that was originally done by an artist.

ACEO cards should always be signed by the artist. They should state whether they are "Editions" or "Originals". The difference would be:
  • Editions would be variations of the same picture. Such circumstances would be similar to a Series in effect, more than one of the same imagry with a good portion (or effectively all) the same, maybe doing it in a different style, different color scheme, different, medium, (but not required) but each one unique while alike all the others even if it is simply because it is hand painted, printed, drawn, etc.
  • Originals would be one of a kind (OOAK). Each and every picture is unique. They may or may not have things in common (theme, medium, color scheme, style), but each is a piece in and of it's self, not relating to the others.
Compare these definitions to other similar definitions:
  • Prints would be duplicates. A good example would be posters. Exact copies of the original. They have nothing different than any other. These can be done in limited runs (becomes called Limited Edition Print - confusing I know)
  • Limited Edition Print are prints which would be signed, and numbered in order of printing and sold on a first come first served lowest number basis.
  • The other kind of print would be print on demand type limitless numbers.
Some people swear that the limited edition runs are more valuable than the limitless runs, and only buy that type of print, but the print more often than not is the same quality, and therefore, it is my personal opinion you should buy what you can afford, and therefore, what you like, regardless of the "value". Otherwise, all anyone would buy is Picasso's and Worhol's etc. If the art is something that you like, then it is priceless. Ok, off my soap box now.

Great News (for me)!!!

I am really excited. Sometimes it's te simple pleasures that can do that to us, right? Well, I have been on a new "diet", which really isn't a diet, it's just more about changing the combinations I eat foods in, and I have lost 11 lbs in 1 week! I am ecstatic! I realize, this isn't real fat loss yet, but instead lots of water loss (mainly because I am not much of a water drinker, but will drink it sometimes, but now I am drinking more water than I ever thought possible which is allowing my body to release the water it's been holding on to because it knows it's going to get more shortly).

I can't believe it. I really do feel better too. More energy (though I sometimes get very mild headaches - not enough to take an asprin for - I have a very high pain tolerance), and feeling generally more upbeat. I have a hard time eating all the food I need to eat, but I am trying.

Next week, I start on increasing my activity level. I have a desk job, which takes a lot of time, but I am going to begin getting out several times a day and getting back to walking, jogging, biking, cross training, etc. I am very happy about this as well. When my finances get a little better, I am going to be getting ready for some endurance horse races. This will be challenge on more than one level, because while I am training I will be looking for, training, and conditioning a horse for such an endeavor.

I am excited, and amped, and rearing to go now that I know something about this was successful. It has been a long time coming.

Wild Bird Photography

These birds were taken in the trees and on the fences around my backyard. The variety is small right now, but we are in the midst of the spring migrations back north, so I am hoping to get more. I am also looking forward to getting to take some hummingbirds in the Turks Caps in the gardens.

Pet Portraits

Here is pictures of my Miniature Schnauzer, Einstein. He is approximately 5 years old. He has been shaved because he got into something and his skin broke out in a rash, but he is a pure bred. And yes, his ears were cropped before we got him and they have always been lop sided like that. It's part of his endearing charm! :D We love him anyway!



Einstein is Ivory's pet. Ivory is a dog I got from an SPCA adoption in at Christmas time 2002. She is approximately 10 years old. She is an American Eskimo / Jack Russel Terrier mix with the sweetest eyes and the gentlest temperament. I am considering training her to be a therapy animal.





This is Tootsie Roll, one of my parents dogs. He showed up in their house on March 6, 2007, and made himself right at home. His choice of person is my dad, but he puts up with anyone who will pay attention to him, especially if you kiss his chin. He's a dachshund / besingi mix we think, though he does have a little bit of a look of Chihuahua. He acts and sounds nothing like a chihuahua though. He doesn't bark, he chortles, like a besingi. He is also marked just like a besingi except his tail doesn't curl enough, it's long and straight like a dachshund, as he is long and low slung like a dachshund.



Valentine's pictures sadly did not work because the flash reflected too strongly in her eyes. I will try for pictures of her again today.

Updating the art world, and all my watchers

I have been on a bit of a photography kick for a while, and done quite a lot. Not all of it has been macro, but much of it has. I have also started doing some drawings and such. I really need to get going on my website, but I am a little stuck on that. I have several designs, and multiple ideas, but just how to implement them is bum-fuzzling me to an extent I haven't found all the answers yet.

Well as for new photos, I am downloading them to the computer right now, and will have them posted in this message (or maybe a msg or two after to break it up so it isn't hard to read and flow - depends on how many actually work out as I hoped).

I am also writing this blog while I am working on several other projects.

The Carousel Horse (Spring) is just about ready. It has gone through several incarnations, but I am just about done to publish it in it's final state. Just a little more work on the fine details.

The Carousel Horses (Fall/Autumn, Winter, Summer) are in the planning stages, but as soon as I get Spring done I am going to start a new one. It's a toss up of whether it will be Winter, or Fall, but I have lots of great ideas! I hope to have all three of these done by the end of the month of April. I technically have until the end of May, but I REALLY want some down time to work on another project that this one sparked - a Carousel Horse for every month of the year, and tossing in an extra one for Birthdays.

I have some pencil drawings I have been working on. They are going well, but been tossed on the back burner for the Carousel Horses project(s). I will come back to them shortly.

You know, inspiration can come from so many places, one just has to be prepared to use the inspiration they have been handed. I have recently found some such inspiration, and will be creating a series of environmentally based pieces inspired by the art of another artist. (more information on this to come)

OK, so the photos have downloaded, and the ones that don't need cropping are going to be posted in the next msg because there are so many, but the ones that need cropping will be posted in a following msg, because I need time to do the work, and I am too excited to wait to post any of them for the others.

First attempt at Macro Photography #3

I am going to break this post up into a few sections purely for readability.

This is Section 3, for Wild Onion, Lupines, and Opposites.

I attempted Macro Photography for the first time yesterday, and there were several plants I couldn't identify, but I felt like they did well, so here is some of the shots.
